Recently I had to switch to a new laptop at my workplace.  I had to return the old one before I can get the new one. I had saved all bookmarks, passwords and other preferences information to my sync account provided by Firefox.  I saved the username and password of the account and also the sync key. I did not save the bookmarks on any other device as I was confident that  I would be surely able to get back all my data with the sync key.

When I got my new laptop, it has come with the the latest version – Firefox 31.o which has a different sync mechanism and there’s no way to sync the data saved in the old way.  After doing some search on the google, I did the following to get my data back.

  • I installed Firefox version 28.0 which has the old sync mechanism. I did not have to uninstall 31.0, installing 28.0 has just overridden it.
  • Synced all my bookmarks and passwords to my laptop using the sync key and username/password.
  • Now upgraded to Firefox 31.0

Puttycm Windows 8 http://www.windowstipspage.com/puttycm-windows-8/ http://www.windowstipspage.com/puttycm-windows-8/#comments Sun, 08 Sep 2013 04:37:02 +0000 http://www.windowstipspage.com/?p=672

PuttyCM is a multi tabbed ssh/telnet client for Windows OS.

Download Putty connection manager

Install the above and Windows 8 setup will automatically download the required versions of .Net Framework. When I installed it on my system, it downloaded 2.o initially and then later downloaded version 3.5 also. It requires these versions even though the system has 4.5 version inbuilt with Windows OS.

You can find detailed setup instructions on this page.  Configuring putty connection manager. However  steps vary slightly on Windows 8.

Steps I followed:

First created the database after launching puttycm.

Closed Puttycm. It asked for the location to store the newly created database file. Select a folder and exit.

open puttycm. Now you can see the database name with ssh/telnet subnodes in the connection manager on the right side.

Create new ssh/telnet connections.

How to disable ‘Reply All’ in Outlook email http://www.windowstipspage.com/disable-reply-all-in-outlook/ http://www.windowstipspage.com/disable-reply-all-in-outlook/#comments Mon, 12 Aug 2013 17:56:10 +0000 http://www.windowstipspage.com/?p=664

I’m sharing one very useful tip for Outlook users. When you are sending an email to bigger audience, you might not want the recipients to do ‘Reply all’ on the email. Otherwise it might create lot of spam which the other recipients of the email would not want to receive. And surely you would not want to be cursed for initiating such an email.  If you are in such a situation, you can install the below outlook add-in from Microsoft research team.

Download NoReplyAll add-on : http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/60860f41-88ab-4bb4-8104-765feca9cfed/default.aspx

Steps:

  • Download the add-on and install it.
  • Close outlook and restart
  • compose a new e-mail. You can see buttons to disable ‘Reply all’, ‘Reply’ and ‘Forward’ features on the email.

Select the desired option and send the email. that’s all.

I tried this add-on with Outlook 2010 and it worked. It works with Outlook 2007 and 2013 also.

2 ways to find Windows install date http://www.windowstipspage.com/find-windows-install-date/ http://www.windowstipspage.com/find-windows-install-date/#comments Sun, 07 Jul 2013 17:53:38 +0000 http://www.windowstipspage.com/?p=659

When we install Windows on a computer, the installation time is recorded in the system. We have multiple ways to find the installation date.

Using Systeminfo command

Run the below command from Windows command prompt.

systeminfo | findstr /C:"Install Date"
C:\>systeminfo | findstr /C:"Install Date"
Original Install Date: 2/16/2013, 2:57:47 PM

As you can see in the above example, it prints the exact date along with the time. This command is verified to be working both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Using WMI command

The other way to find the install date is to use WMI commands.

wmic os get installdate

This one prints the date and time as below.

C:\>wmic os get installdate
InstallDate
20130216145747.000000+330

How to convert Outlook email to pdf http://www.windowstipspage.com/convert-outlook-email-to-pdf/ http://www.windowstipspage.com/convert-outlook-email-to-pdf/#comments Wed, 06 Jun 2012 17:49:37 +0000 http://www.windowstipspage.com/?p=601

If you want to save one of your outlook emails as a pdf file, then you can do that by following the below steps. Outlook does not have any direct feature to do this, so we use MS Word as an intermediate place holder in the conversion to pdf file.

  • Open the email and copy the email content(Ctrl-A followed by Ctrl-C)
Open Word application (Execute winword from Run)
Paste the content copied from the email.
  • If you are using Office 2010, then click save as in the Word application. Office 2007 does not have this feature. You need to install ‘Save as pdf‘ add-on.  Scroll down further for instructions to install this add-on.
  • Enter file name
  • In the ‘save as type’ field, click on the drop down list and select ‘PDF

Save email content as pdf file

Include From,To fields and other headers in the pdf:

If you copy content from the email, it does not include from, to fields and time stamp information. To include this data, you can do a small trick. Open the email message and click on Forward. Now copy the content from the window, and discard the message. The copied content includes all the headers also. You can also use ‘Reply‘ button instead of ‘Forward‘.

Install ‘Save as pdf’ addon in Outlook 2007

Download the addon from Microsoft office portal

Double click the file and install it as per the instructions on the screen.

After the addon installation, you would be able to see save as pdf option in the file menu in Word application.

Offline files and folder redirection in Windows 7 http://www.windowstipspage.com/offline-files-folder-redirection-windows-7/ http://www.windowstipspage.com/offline-files-folder-redirection-windows-7/#comments Sat, 02 Jun 2012 19:38:33 +0000 http://www.windowstipspage.com/?p=587

Like in XP, Windows 7 also enables offline files feature for redirected folders automatically.  User’s explicit action is not required to cache the files of these folders locally. This provides access to the files without any disruption even if the network in down.

How to disable offline files for redirected folders in Windows 7?

This can be done by configuring group policy. If you are a domain administrator, and if you want to disable offline files for all users in a OU group, then you can configure the domain group policy. Otherwise, if you want to disable it on only one computer, you can configure the group policy on the local computer.

In both the cases, the steps are similar and are given below.

Navigate to the below path in group policy editor.

User Configuration -> Administrative templates -> System -> Folder Redirection

In the right side pane, double click on the setting ‘Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline’. Set the status of this setting to enabled.

Disable offline files for redirected folders in Windows 7

Close group policy editor. You can manually do gpupdate to update the group policies on your account. The next time users log in, they will notice that ‘Always available offline‘ is not ticked for redirected folders.
