Compression is disabled for this volume

If you are getting the error ‘Compression is disabled for this volume‘ when you are trying to compress a file, then you can fix the problem by doing the steps mentioned in this article. These steps enable compression on the computer. You need to have administrator privileges to execute these steps.

File compression error in Windows

  • Open registry editor(Regedit) and navigate to the node HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
  • Set the data in the registry value ‘NtfsDisableCompression‘ to 0. This will enable NTFS compression feature.
  • Reboot the computer
